The CARBONland
has been created as part of the MSc module GEOG3057 & GEOGG131: GlobalEnvironmental Change and the main purpose is to explore the world of Carbon, by
learning and understanding its contribution in our life via investigation and
discussion.
And why Carbon? It is a very important element
with many chemical compounds, which behavior is crucial for the life and the
environment. For example; soil carbon helps the agriculture and the carbon
dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere influences the climate.
Let’s become more specific:
Carbon is a chemical element placed in the 2nd
period and 14th group of the periodic table and it is symbolized
with the letter C (as it is illustrated in the table below).
There is no better way to check some info than an
ID card!
And what about the home address? Oh! Carbon is everywhere!!! In the soil, in the oceans and
in the atmosphere. Of course it can’t stand in a place. It is transferred
around these places, creating the Carbon
Cycle.
Yes I know, too many things to say about this cycle!
That’s why our journey in Carbonland will be long, with many investigations
about the carbon through various studies. Especially I will focus on the soil carbon,
but I will also have a look in its interaction with the water and the atmosphere
as they are important part of the cycle.
In this first article I decided to give you a
taste of the relation between the carbon and the Global Environmental Change
with the video below:
A lonely journey doesn’t have fun, so don’t
hesitate to join and send your comments, opinions or ideas below. That’s the
path of learning: through discussion!
See you soon, carbon creatures!
